The Emerging Speaker Showcase is a TED-like event featuring emerging speakers, each delivering a 9-minute talk. This event, our third in the series, is produced by Articulation, under the direction of our founder, Ruth Milligan.
Meet Our Speakers
Michelle Mays
Michelle Mays is a Licensed Professional Counselor and expert in treating sexual betrayal and trauma. She’s also the author of the new book The Betrayal Bind: How to Heal When the Person You Love the Most Has Hurt You the Worst. Michelle has created The Braving Hope™ Treatment Model to address the devastating dilemma that betrayed partners face when their significant other is unsafe to connect to, yet connection is the key to healing.
Michelle is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Supervisor in both Virginia and Washington DC, and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist and Supervisor. She was trained by Pia Mellody in the Post Induction Therapy model for treating developmental trauma and is currently completing her PhD in Clinical Sexology and certification in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples.
Kim Regis
Dr. Kim Regis is a highly accomplished and respected healthcare professional with a wealth of experience in pediatric nursing, leadership, education, and coaching. With her impressive array of qualifications and expertise, Dr. Regis has made significant contributions to the field of healthcare through her clinical practice, leadership roles, and dedication to professional development.
She holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, specializing in pediatric nursing. Her educational journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) followed by a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a focus on Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP). Driven by a commitment to advancing her knowledge and skills, she pursued her doctoral degree, where she conducted research on improving healthcare outcomes for pediatric patients and their families.
Dr. Regis’s dedication to excellence extends beyond direct patient care. She has held numerous leadership positions and has been instrumental in guiding healthcare teams, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and implementing quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and optimize healthcare delivery.
Recognizing the importance of continuous professional development and mentorship, Dr. Regis has obtained the designation of Board-Certified Coach (BCC). This credential allows her to provide coaching and support to healthcare professionals, empowering them to achieve their career goals, enhance their leadership skills, and cultivate a culture of excellence within their respective healthcare organizations. Dr. Regis has also served as a faculty member at renowned nursing programs, teaching and mentoring aspiring nurses and nurse practitioners. In addition to her clinical and educational roles, Dr. Regis is an active participant in professional organizations related to pediatric nursing and healthcare leadership. She has presented her research findings at national conferences, authored articles in peer-reviewed journals, and actively engages in healthcare policy discussions to advocate for the needs of pediatric patients and their families.
With her impressive qualifications, extensive experience, and dedication to professional growth, Dr. Kimberly R. Regis has become a recognized leader in pediatric nursing and healthcare leadership.
Elizabeth Wardle
Elizabeth Wardle has served as the Roger and Joyce Howe Distinguished Professor of Written Communication and the Director of the Howe Center for Writing Excellence since 2016. In the HCWE she takes primary responsibility for faculty development initiatives. She is interested in working with colleagues across the university to promote deep change around teaching and learning. With colleagues she has designed and implemented curricular innovation programs such as the Howe Faculty Writing Fellows Program (2017-present), the Miami Writing Institute (2021-present), the Leading Change Institute (2020-21), and Pathways to Expertise (2013-14).
Her books include Writing about Writing (now in its fifth edition); Naming What We Know: Threshold Concepts of Writing Studies; Composition, Rhetoric, and Disciplinarity; and (re)Considering What We Know: Learning Thresholds in Writing, Composition, and Rhetoric. With the HCWE staff and Faculty Fellows, she is co-author of the forthcoming book Changing Conceptions, Changing Practices: Innovating Teaching Across the Disciplines. With HCWE National Advisory Board member Linda Adler-Kassner, she is co-author of the forthcoming book, Writing Expertise: A Research-Based Approach to Writing and Learning Across Disciplines. She has also published over 30 articles and chapters in the top journals of her field.
She is the winner of Miami’s University Distinguished Scholar Award (2019-20) and the University of Central Florida’s Teaching Incentive Program and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning awards (2012). Under her leadership, the Howe Center for Writing Excellence was awarded a Conference on College Composition and Communication Writing Program Certificate of Excellence (2021-22), as was the First-Year Writing Program at the University of Central Florida (2013), and the Howe Writing Across the Curriculum Program was awarded the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum’s Exemplary Enduring WAC Program Award (2022). Her published work has been named the Council of Writing Program Administrators’ Outstanding Scholarship Award (2022) and Outstanding Contribution to the Discipline (2016), and NCTE’s Best Article of the Year in Teaching of Technical and Scientific Communication (2005). She speaks and gives workshops regularly around the country on program design, threshold concepts, transfer, first-year writing, and writing across the curriculum.
Charlotte Wilson
Charlotte Wilson brings 25 years of experience in marketing, sales and product development from a variety of industries including consumer packaged goods, technology and healthcare. Wilson currently serves as Senior Director of Digital Engagement at Geisinger, a regional healthcare and insurance provider serving over 3 million people across Pennsylvania. Prior to joining Geisinger, Wilson served as AVP Digital Strategy at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center where she led digital user experience, digital marketing, CRM and digital health initiatives.
Charlotte has a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism from Bowling Green State University and a M.B.A. from Franklin University.

Joy Zhao is a Corporate Career Coach, Business Executive, and Self-Empowerment Strategist who guides aspiring business professionals in maximizing potential, rising the corporate ladder, and achieving career goals with confidence and courage. With 15+ years of experience in leadership roles for big brands and high-tech companies, including two in the Fortune 100, Joy has mentored 100+ professionals in optimizing their business performance and charting a positive path forward. Now, as a certified coach, she helps clients navigate successful careers using a signature methodology that includes her ‘Thick-Skin Theory’ and ‘Courage Formula.’ She quickly identifies what holds them back and then liberates them with a mastery of skillsets in everything from improving interpersonal communication and leadership influence, to overcoming corporate adversity and imposter syndrome, to organizing life and avoiding burnout. Her expertise: strengths-based development, 360-degree corporate relationship building, and mastery of positive self-talk.
Joy’s own career story evolved through overcoming challenges as a 28-year-old Chinese immigrant and inexperienced female professional seeking to achieve success in a country where she could not speak English. Her career journey—full of opportunities, challenges and adventures—taught her the trifecta of confidence, perseverance and resilience, which would inevitably shape her ‘Courage Formula’
As a personal adventure (and a 44-year-birthday gift to herself), Joy founded a career & leadership development company, ‘Finding Joy Coaching.’ She builds creative empowerment solutions for clients, inspiring them to tune into their superpower and use it for greatness.
Joy holds a Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Statistics, and a Certified Professional Coach (CPC) license, with additional completed courses in self-development, executive presence and leadership.
